Challenges of internationalization of the scenic arts


Presentation:
The increasing circulation of works of art in the globalized world is a phenomenon that applies particularly to the field of performing arts, evidenced by the increasing participation of artistic creations in the programming of different festivals and theaters, whether in Brazil or abroad. This course aims to present and analyze the main aspects related to the complex network of internationalization of the scenic arts. We will start from a general panorama, which locates the circulation of spectacles in the context of culture globalization, in order to then approach specific themes.

Thus, in three different modules, from January to March, we will discuss from the challenges of a cultural policy focused on foreign relations to the practical aspects of qualification of Brazilian professionals who aim to work at the international level. The classes will be given by the organizer of the course, Andrea Caruso Saturnino, with the participation of professionals both from the area and from related areas, who will contribute to the reflections on the topics addressed.

 MODULE 1 – JANUARY
Introduction. Overview of the international production chain. Main challenges of the internationalization of the Brazilian scenic arts. Critical perspectives regarding internationalization.
Class 2: Institutional aspects: Brazilian perspective in the context of culture globalization.
The contemporary scenic creation in times of globalization: circulation, influences, collaborations, partnerships.
International collaborations – the action of cultural representations in Brazil.

Andrea Caruso Saturnino is a researcher and curator, specialized in contemporary theater and interdisciplinary projects, with long international experience. Graduated in Literature from UFMG (Federal University of Minas Gerais – Belo Horizonte), Master in Scenic Arts from Sorbonne Nouvelle (Paris) and PhD in Arts from USP (São Paulo). In 2009, she founded the production company Performas, responsible for presenting important names of the contemporary scene to the Brazilian audience. Currently, she is dedicated to the implementation of Brasil Cena Aberta platform, focused on actions for the development of the internationalization of the national scenic arts in its multiple aspects.

Christiano Braga is an economist, specialized in foreign trade with focus on small businesses. MBA in management with focus on strategy. Specialist in culture, management and development. Responsible for the implementation and coordination of projects for the internationalization of creative cultural goods and services at the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency, APEX-Brasil.

Isabel de Paula is the Coordinator of Culture at UNESCO in Brazil, where she has been working for 15 years, 10 of them in the area of Social Communication. She holds a Graduation Degree in Journalism and a Post-Graduation Degree in Cultural Management and Politics from the University of Girona (Spain). She is a Master’s student in the Post-Graduation Program of Development, Society and International Cooperation at the Centro de Estudos Avançados Multidisciplinares (CEAM) at the University of Brasília UnB) and researcher at Observatório de Políticas Culturais (Opcult/UnB).

Rosana Paulo Cunha is Cultural Action Manager at SESC SP, Master in Management and Public Policies from Fundação Getúlio Vargas (São Paulo) and specialist in Project Management from FEA – USP.
Liliane Rebelo is Cultural Manager of Cultura Inglesa São Paulo. She holds a Graduation degree in Journalism, and a specialization in Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing and is currently studying Cultural Projects Management at CELACC at USP – University of São Paulo. She worked at Arts Manager at the British Council Brazil promoting the cultural exchange between the UK and Brazil. During her experience in Scotland, she worked as International Manager at Festivals Edinburgh, where she played a collaborative management role for the twelve large Edinburgh festivals.

Natalia Mallo is a multi-artist and curator. Her concerns lie in the intersection of languages and production and management models in projects dealing with diversity policies. Specialized in cultural diplomacy, she works with international organizations developing collaborative projects seeking a dialogue between art and society. She is artistic director of RISCO Festival, an international event which first edition will take place December/2018.
Reception of the Brazilian scenic arts abroad. Composition of schedules against the idealization of the foreigner.
Legal-strategic issues: contracts, tax issues, and work visas.
Technical direction: planning and adaptation to the presentation spaces.
Celso Curi is a producer, cultural manager, translator and journalist. Since 1968 he has been working in the cultural area. Director of OFF Produções Culturais. Creator and Editor of the “OFF Guide of Theater SP and RJ”. President of APCA – São Paulo Art Critics Association. Curator of Festival Câmbio de Recife.

Cris Olivieri is a lawyer with specialization in Management of Communication and Cultural Processes from ECA-USP and a Master in Cultural Policy from ECA-USP. Master in Arts Administration from Boston University (USA), with a Virtuose scholarship from the Ministry of Culture. Director of Olivieri e Associados Advocacia (www.olivieriassociados.com.br), working in the area of consulting for culture, communication and entertainment for 30 years. Co-author of the book Direito_Arte e Liberdade (2018) and the Brazilian Guide to Cultural Production, edited since 2007, and last edition “Cidades” in 2016, and author of the book “Cultura Neoliberal – Leis de incentive como política pública de cultura” Member of the Brazilian Forum on Cultural Rights (www.fbdc.com.br) and the Arts Commission of OAB/SP [Brazilian Bar Association].
Marcello Braga Romão is a customs broker, graduated in Law from the Centro Universitário do Rio de Janeiro (Univercidade), with more than 30 years of experience in Foreign Trade and strong performance in Special Customs Regimes. Marcello is the founder and currently COO and Vice-President of Waiver Logistics Group, leading logistics company in Latin America for major events.

Hugo Mercier has been working in theater and entertainment field since 2002. After finishing his qualification in lighting and video capture, he chose the stage of theaters to exercise the technical area in different areas: lighting, production, machinery, rigging. He is currently a partner of Vertical Rigging Solutions, working as technical director, lightener and rigger, both in Brazil and abroad. He has worked and continues to work with several international companies, such as Théâtre du Soleil (France), Cia. Dos à Deux (France/Brazil), The Works Entertainment (United States), Sarau Agência de Cultura (Rio de Janeiro), Cirque du Soleil (Canada).

MODULE
Creating and presenting outside national borders: permeability and diversity. Finding new audiences.
From diffusion to cooperation strategies – building long-term partnerships.
Organizational aspects of tour: from the construction of networks to circulation.
Conclusion and prospection of strategies for international action.

Aurea Vieira is International Relations Manager at SESC SP, an institution where she has been working in since 2004. She holds a degree in Philosophy from the Federal University of Uberlândia and a Post-Graduation degree in Cultural Management from Fundação Getúlio Vargas. In 2008/2009 she worked as coordinator of the Year of France in Brazil by the Brazilian Commission, whose president was Danilo Miranda. Since then, she has been invited to compose foreign delegations for world cultural analyzes as representative of SESC in the Council of the Football Museum (2019); member of the Council of the International Society for Performing Arts (ISPA) since 2010; participated in the America’s Workshop of Biennial of the Americas in Denver, USA, 2013; she was elected as Young Cultural Leaders at the Global Salzburg Seminar in Salzburg in 2012; she was a member of the Management Culture Conference at the Goethe Institut in Berlin in 2012; she studied Financement et Économie de la Culture in Paris Dauphine University, in Paris, 2009. She is responsible for the foreign institutional partnerships at SESC, having as partners the Institut Français, General Consulate of France, British Council, Goethe Institut, Adam Mickiewicz Foundation, Edinburgh Festivals, New Museum, MoMA, Acción Española, Frankfurt Fair, La Fabrica, Robert Sterling Clark Foundation, Cité de la Musique, ZKM, Dutch Culture, Brazil-Turkey Cultural Center, Bogota Festival, Santiago a Mil, ISCA, OITS, SEGIB, among others. She was awarded the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres medal in 2011 and the Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur medal in 2017, both awarded by the Government of the French Republic.
Paula Alves de Souza holds a degree in International Relations and began her diplomatic career in 1994. She has worked at the Brazilian Embassies in Washington, Buenos Aires and Beijing. In Brasilia, she headed the Audiovisual Promotion Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, between 2008 and 2013. Since November 2016, she holds the position of Director of the Cultural Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Henrique Mariano has been working with major theater companies for 25 years in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro as Cia Vértice, Cia. dos Atores, Coletivo Improviso, Opovoempé, Cia Elevador de Teatro Panorâmico, Teatro da Vertigem, Cia. Livre de Teatro, Teatro Oficina, Teatro Promiscuo, Teatro do Ornitorrinco among others. Among the directors he worked with: Christiane Jatahy, Enrique Diaz, Antônio Araujo, Cibele Forjaz, Cristiane Zuan Esteves, Marcelo Lazzaratto, Hector Babenco, José Celso Martinez Corrêa , Cacá Rosset, Hamilton Vaz Pereira, Ariela Goldmann. He was director of production of TEMPO_FESTIVAL das Arte in Rio de Janeiro edition of 2012. Since 2004, he has been touring internationally with Brazilian artists, mainly in Europe. He has produced some international artists in Brazil such as Meredith Monk (United States), Ziya Azazi (Turkey), Rimini Protokol (Germany), Hello Earth (Denmark) and Teater Kunst (Denmark).
